Magic Millions 2YO Classic Race Preview
Magic Millions is a limited entry race that is part of the Magic Millions Carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1200m and is open to two-year-olds with set weight conditions, but no class or gender restrictions. It is only for horses donated or sold in the Magic Millions sale. The race was first held in 1987 and is today one of the three most valuable races for two year olds in Australia, the other two being the Golden Slipper and the Blue Diamond Stakes.
This race is part of the $11.75 million Magic Millions race day scheduled for 14th January; other races include Magic Millions 3 Year Guineas, Magic Millions Cup and Magic Millions Syndicate, among others.
Magic Millions 2YO Classic Betting Tips
The Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner receives a $1.1 million prize pool. Key pre-race runs include the Phelan Ready Stakes 1050m held in December, BJ McLachlan’s 1200m stakes held two weeks prior and other races held in the Gold Coast prior to Magic Millions Day .
The most recent horse to complete the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and BJ McLachlan Stakes double was Coolangatta in 2021-22. The horse was also the players’ favorite to win the race in 2022 at odds of $1.95. Horses with previous betting race wins have dominated the Magic Millions 2YO Classic field, but there have been setbacks as well. One such disappointment came in 2020 when a filly on the road won by $41 odds.
Runners who dominate group races with similar conditions are also strong Magic Millions players. It is well suited for viewing horses that have proven themselves in group or steam racing, especially those with equal distances. It is also recommended to look for two-year-old runners who have had at least two races in their career. To date, none of the Magic Millions Classic winning horses have completed less than two races before entering. Another tip is to look for fillies at the races as they have dominated race results for the past five years. Statistics show that fillies have won 9 times over the past 13 years, with Coolangatta being the last winner.
